Request Summary: A&E admittance for mental health - under 18 and over 18

Request Category: Private Individuals

Question Number 1:
For each individual calendar year – 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and also 2021 to date if possible.

1.The number of adults (aged 18+) that presented to A&E due to mental health related issues?
1.b - How many of these patients were admitted following a visit to A&E due to mental health?

Answer To Question 1:
Please see the Excel spreadsheet attached which contains our responses to both questions.

Please note, we are unable to determine exactly whether an admission from A&E into hospital is directly due to mental health from clinical coding alone. Often there may be mental health present in someone's reason for attendance although the main diagnosis coded is of a physical injury/complaint e.g. cut to hand.

However, we looked at the overall number of admissions from A&E where mental health was involved with the A&E attendance and we also looked separately at the number of these admissions where mental health was listed as a primary diagnosis on the admitting hospital episode. 9472 - FOI_6037 - ED Attendances for mental health - under 18 and over 18.xlsx
