Can I drive after surgery?

Not the first 24 hours and longer for conditions affecting sight like cataract and glaucoma surgery. Common sense - if you don’t feel your vision is clear or comfortable enough to drive, then please don’t.

Can I go to work after surgery?

This depends on nature of your job and type of surgery so please discuss this in your pre-operative assessment if you have any concerns.

How soon can I travel?

Travelling by road and sea are permitted after surgery. However it is not advised to travel by flight for 1 week after surgery unless agreed by your clinician.

How soon can I start to exercise after surgery?

Take it easy and gradually build up your exercise regimen.

What do I need to do after my surgery?

Be sensible and take medication and precautions advised. Read literature given and contact the department, GP or emergency department if any grave concerns.

Where do I get repeat prescriptions if I run out of medication?

Following most operations you should have received enough drops to last till your next visit.

From your GP for all long term medication unless they are hospital only which is very rare.

What if I want to go privately?

If you wish to be seen privately please ask your GP to refer you or pass a message to your clinician via the secretariat. Not all clinicians do private practice.

About my Laser treatment

If you are due to have Laser treatment you will need drops in your eyes and are likely to have blurred vision after so will not be able to drive. You are likely to be in the department for about an hour. You will have paperwork to sign so please ensure that you have glasses needed to read with you.

After my Minor Operation:

If you are due to have a minor procedure you are likely to have your eye covered with a dressing after so will not be able to drive. You are likely to be in the department for about an hour or longer. You will have paperwork to sign so please ensure that you have glasses needed to read with you.
