| Question Number 2: How was their respiratory rate incorporated into the NEWS2 record and EHR or similar system for the patients admitted with these codes? Please describe as closely as possible the process and systems used. | |
| Answer To Question 2: Patient's respiratory rate is recorded as part of a full set of vital observations and recorded on the NEWS2 scoring system. The frequency depends on the clinical presentation of the individual at that time and the score of the NEWS2. The process involves counting the breaths a patient takes over a 1 minute period. Good practice would include feeling for the patient's radial pulse as a form of distraction, so the patient does not recognise the healthcare professional is measuring breaths which can influence the result. Assessing the pattern of breaths taken, the use of accessory muscles and whether the chest is symmetrical comes with experience and should be part of the respiratory assessment but not necessarily part of the rate for NEWS2 scoring. | |
