Request Summary: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD)
Request Category: Charities
Question Number 1: Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I would like to request the following information in regard to the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) by your organisation: • Does your organisation commission any services for people with DMD? o If no, does your organisation expect to commission services for DMD in the future? o If yes, what services for people with DMD does your organisation commission?
Answer To Question 1: The trust does not commission any services for DMD paediatric patients outside of the block contract for general paediatrics. For paediatric DMD care this is lead by the tertiary paediatric neurology team based in Southampton – I am not sure if this is a commissioned service. We have no expectation to commission service for DMD in the future. Therapy services for this population group are provided through HCRG community team. Some of the older children with DMD may have respiratory compromise requiring specialist paediatric respiratory physiotherapy. There is no commissioned service for this in either an acute or community setting for our local children and young people. The tertiary centre may provide monitoring and equipment for this part of DMD care but do not offer outreach.
Question Number 2: • How many people with DMD does your organisation serve?
Answer To Question 2: There are currently <5 children with DMD under care of Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust
Question Number 3: • Does your organisation have any DMD-specific (or muscle-wasting disease-specific) policies or guidance?
Answer To Question 3: No – guidance and planning for paediatric DMD patients is provided in shared care of patients with Southampton Paediatric neurology team
Question Number 4: • Do any of your organisation’s strategies, objectives, plans, performance indicators, audits, inspections, or similar, cite DMD (or any muscle-wasting disease) or use either as a metric?
Answer To Question 4: No – (Paediatrics also don’t have specific mention of other neuromuscular diagnoses such as Becker’s, SMA, myotonic dystrophy)
