Request Summary: medical retina services

Request Category: Companies

Question Number 1:
Medical retina services - Wet AMD and other anti VEGf treated condition, covering demand, capacity, and delivery

For the financial years 2022/23, 2023/24 and current YTD, how many referrals have you received for wet AMD, diabetic macular oedema and retinal vein occlusion (Anti VEGf services) or perhaps referred to as medical retina?

Answer To Question 1:
We are unable to accurately answer this question as the referral data we collect does not break down to subspecialty level.

For Medical retina (Excluding Wet AMD) we can make an assumption on number of referrals from New patient attendances:
2022 = 818
2023 = 745
2024 to date = 670

For Diabetic Retinopathy the same for New patient attendances:
2022 = 182
2023 = 202
2024 to date = 154

For the following we can only identify them through the number treated with Anti VEGf.

Retinal Vein Occlusion (injected)
2022 = 194 patients (651 injections)
2023= 255 patients (969 Injections)
2024 to end of March = 166 patients (224 injections)

The following are the number of injections given but each patient can have multiple injections as a series of treatments:

Number of injections (NOT patients) for Wet AMD
2022= 2114
2023=1650
2024 to end of March = 337

Number of injections (NOT patients) for Diabetic Macular Oedema
2022= 61
2023=305
2024 to end of March = 51

The total number of injections given in those years for all conditions is
2022=3648
2023=5427
2024 until end of March = 1259

Question Number 2:
For the financial years 2022/23, 2023/24 and current YTD, how many referrals have you rejected as unsuitable or undeliverable by your Trust?

Answer To Question 2:
Unable to answer as rejected referrals are not recorded onto a system that can be queried retrospectively to count how many there have been.

Question Number 3:
For the financial years 2022/23, 2023/24 and current YTD, how many referrals have you received, triaged, booked and completed first assessment and treatment within the 2 week RTT advised by NICE and the college of ophthalmologists? We are looking for your Trust performance data against the 14 day standard as a % by month for the periods - 2023/24 and 2024/25

Answer To Question 3:
