Request Summary: Spinal Manual Handling
Request Category: Health
Question Number 1: What training is provided at Trust level to ensure safe and holistic care of the patients with spinal cord injury and which group of professionals is the training directed to?
Answer To Question 1: Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Study days which provide an overview of SCI Care and the core considerations for providing holistic care, as well as the Spinal Manual Handling have previously been delivered by ITU staff. Due to the inclusion of the Spinal Manual Handling element there was a minimum requirement of 5 attendees and 4 trainers to deliver the 3 days required for competence in Manual Handling to be acquired. These study days have been reviewed and the content divided. From January 2025 there will be 4 study days a year which will focus on the core considerations. These will be 1 day study days and will not include the Spinal Manual Handling competence, but will ensure that staff attending from across the trust and the community have a wider understanding of delivering care to people with an SCI. In addition Bowel Care training is provided separately, direct to Band 5 RN’s by the Spinal Unit Education Team.
Question Number 2: What training is available at Trust level for the Spinal Manual Handling competencies, for band 2, 3, 4, 5 and above? Who is responsible for the delivery of such training, does it fall under the Manual Handling or the Spinal Unit/Centre remit?
Answer To Question 2: What training is available at Trust level for the Spinal Manual Handling competencies for Band 2, 3, 4, 5 and above? SFT have a training package that meets national guidelines for Spinal Manual Handling competencies for Band 5 and above. Who is responsible for the deliver of such training, does it fall under the Manual Handling or the Spinal Unit/Centre remit? The Trust Expert Manual Handling Advisor has oversight of the training that has been delivered by them and 3 other staff from the Trust who have completed the Train the Trainer Course
Question Number 3: How often is training delivered and how are competencies achieved and maintained? Are updates required to maintain competency?
Answer To Question 3: Training was being delivered in cohorts of 3 each year and this was being supported by the ICU education team with MH lead and Orthotics team and comprises of three sessions over several weeks to complete all aspects of the training and competencies. This requires staff to have yearly updates. There are no future dates for this training due to availability of trainers, but the Manual Handling Advisor is in discussion with the Spinal Unit to support additional staff through the Train-the-trainer course to increase the availability for trust wide delivery.
Question Number 4: What guidance document/competency (e.g. MASCIP) is used during training of Spinal Manual Handling skills?
Answer To Question 4: The training is delivered using evidence-based practice from the MASCIP guidelines
Question Number 5: How frequently trainers on Spinal Manual Handling skills would require updates?
