Request Summary: patient conditioning for surgery
Request Category: Media
Question Number 1: Please can I have the following data regarding elective patients’ conditioning for surgery, regarding the 2023-24 financial year. - On how many occasions did an elective patient at your trust not proceed with a planned date for surgery once a date had been given?
Answer To Question 1: 1542 elective cancellations responses also on attached file with answers 1-5 To accompany this answer to question 1 please also see the documents listed below: ![]()
Question Number 2: How many of these cancellations or postponements were due to the patient being deemed not fit for surgery?
Answer To Question 2: 163 elective cancellations/postponements linked to Patient Illness
Question Number 3: Please sub-categorise if possible – i.e. how many were due to overweight or obesity, smoking, frailty etc.
Answer To Question 3: We are unable to provide any sub-categorisation because the cancellation reason comments in our electronic patient record system are based on free text typed responses and therefore cannot be easily grouped. There are a high number with no further explanation/categorisation and many with reasons that only apply to one cancellation so to provide the detail would potentially identify patients.
Question Number 4: How many patients did successfully proceed to surgery once a date had been given?
Answer To Question 4: 37,932
Question Number 5: - If it can be provided, please provide the percentage of operations/procedures that were unable to proceed due to a patient being deemed unfit.
Answer To Question 5: Of all cancelled/postponed elective operations/procedures, the percentage that were unable to proceed due to a patient being deemed unfit in 2023/24 was 10.6%
