How can I find out more about the League of Friends?

Do you support bids for financial support from the community?

Yes, we have in the past supported requests from community hospitals, provided that they benefit patients from the Salisbury catchment area.

How much money has the League of Friends given for the benefit of the hospital?

In the last 15 years, we have given over £1 million.

What is the difference in function between the League of Friends and the Stars Appeal?

Both charities help Salisbury Healthcare NHS Trust financially. The Stars Appeal is the main hospital charity and raises money for projects and/or equipment which may cost a million pounds or more. The League of Friends is independent of the hospital and supports smaller projects which often get overlooked but make a big difference to a department or service.

At the same time, we work closely with the Stars Appeal and have responded to requests for help from them, including £100,000 for a keyhole cancer surgery unit, £50,000 for a CT scanner and £20,000 for a family room
attached to the Neo-natal Unit.

What is the largest project that you have done for the hospital?

Since our foundation in 1954, our largest project has been the building of the two bungalows to enable relatives of in-patients to stay the night, particularly important if patients are admitted from far away or as an emergency in the middle of the night. The first bungalow was built in 1979, the second in1994 and both were refurbished at cost of £200,000 in 2017.

Would you undertake such a large project again?

It is unlikely we would do so as this is the remit of the Stars Appeal and they have the resources to do this. Our focus is on the other important need which is departments that see an opportunity to improve their services but lack the funds to do so. Our Trustees are a group of medical and business professionals who meet quarterly to decide which bids can be supported, so applicants get an answer to their request promptly and can implement the improvements rapidly.

Can I raise money for the League of Friends?

We would be delighted if you did so and would help in any way we can.

If I volunteer for the shop, what time commitment will I need to make?

We understand you are giving us your valuable time and try to be as flexible as we can. Most of our volunteers do either a morning or an afternoon shift one day a week, others like to do more.

Can I talk to someone about joining the League of Friends or volunteering?

Of course, why not pop in to the shop in the foyer of the hospital and speak to one of the volunteers.
