The Multi-Disciplinary Team

The Multidisciplinary team meeting (MDT) is a weekly with a range of group of health and social care professionals who work together to manage your treatment and care. The meeting helps to plan further treatment of those patients with confirmed or possible serious breast conditions.

The below pages are designed to introduce you to some of the members of our team and help you understand their roles through the MDT and in your journey following on from your initial clinic appointment.

Breast Surgeons

Our team at Salisbury Hospital is made up of three Breast Surgeons:

The Surgeons are responsible for co-ordinating the symptomatic one-stop breast clinics. The surgeons perform or closely supervise all of the operations performed by the team. They are ultimately responsible for the success of your pre and post operative care.

After your operation, the results are discussed with the whole team at MDT and one of the surgeons will discuss these results with you in clinic two to three weeks after your surgery.

The Breast Specialists Nurses have a wide range of responsibilities within the team. Foremost they are consistent points of contact between the patient, families and other members of the team. You will be in contact with your CNS at different points in your treatment;

CNS's are present at the time of diagnosis of breast cancer providing support, contact information and co-coordinating your care.
At your Pre-Operative Assessment (POA). This appointment supplies you with all the information needed prior to surgery and gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you might have, so you understand your care.
Your CNS's are your first point of contact providing on going telephone support following on from diagnosis.
The CNS's work closely with Surgical and Oncology teams in ongoing follow up in the years after diagnosis and treatments.
CNS's also provide a Family History clinic, Upper Lymph clinic and Breast Review follow up clinic.

Our Breast Service could not run without the enthusiastic efforts of our Radiologists and team of Radiographers. They perform and report a range of tests which provide vital indications as to the final diagnosis of patients with breast symptoms (mammogram, ultrasound, radiology guided biopsies).

Our Histopathologists analyse samples of tissue set from clinic and theatre. They give us the most important single piece of information in the diagnosis of breast diseases. At the multidisciplinary meeting they help us to interpret the pathological report, so that between the team an accurate plan for further treatment can be made.

Our Medical Oncologists advise on and provide medical therapy for cancer. Their major role is with chemotherapy. At MDT, they will provide input on the advisability of chemotherapy for an individual patients and will then discuss the risks and benefits of this therapy with the patient. Chemotherapy is very effective in destroying cancer cells but can also damage normal body cells. The Oncologist must therefore skillfully balance doses of drugs and side effects to provide the best care.

Clinical Oncologists (Radiotherapy doctors) advise on and give radiotherapy treatment. Radiotherapy treatment is important for early breast cancer and is also of value if the breast cancer returns - to relieve local symptoms. Depending on where patients live, we use 4 radiotherapy centers: Southampton, Poole, Basingstoke and Bath, as we do not have facilities to provide radiotherapy at Salisbury Hospital.

Plastic Surgeons

One of the main factors that distinguishes the service at Salisbury from any others is our close contact with a large group of highly experienced plastic surgeons. They can provide the best advice on breast reconstruction, working very closely with our Breast Reconstruction Nurses.

We work with all of the surgeons in the department, each has a slightly different range of skills, so that we can access the right people to give you the optimal result.

BRA Evening

At Salisbury Hospital we run a bimonthly event called the Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) evening. This is an informal evening of information and discussion on breast reconstruction and to meet other women who undergone this type of surgery and an opportunity to discuss their experiences with them.

The MDT Co-ordinator tracks and guides the journey of all patients who have or are though to have serious breast problems. The Co-ordinator makes sure that all the processes are complete to treat a person diagnosed with breast cancer.
