Salisbury Breast Unit opened in December 2016, following on from the Breast Team approaching the Trustees of the Stars Appeal to seek support in launching a fundraising campaign for the new Breast Unit. Prior to the build of the Breast Unit, patients attended busy outpatient departments and moved between different areas of the hospital in one visit, which could be very anxiety provoking for patients.
Visiting the Breast Unit means that all examinations and diagnostic tests are completed under one roof, in a calming environment and space.
The Unit is named after retired Salisbury engineer David Brown, who made a substantial donation to the campaign. Many other generous donors have been recognised within the Unit through named rooms and a placard of all those who kindly donated to the Unit. Please see below the individual stories behind each room.
The David A Brown Breast Unit was funded by donations to the Stars Appeal Breast Cancer Unit Campaign. Amazingly, over £1million was raised and donated by local people and organisations. We are hugely grateful to each and everyone one of our supporters, including those listed below and many, many others.
The Breast Unit has wheelchair accessible facilities.
The Rose Room
Lady Duff Gordon began a revolution in women’s clothing in the early 20th Century for her designs, bespoke dresses and underwear. At a time when modesty and social barriers prevented women from freely discussing their needs for intimate clothes, Lady Duff Gordon shrugged off the taboo and created salons in New York, London, Paris and Chicago.
Not afraid to break from the norm, her vision included making a space in each of the boutiques called 'The Rose Room' in which women could relax, have proper fittings and discuss openly their needs for garments.
Creating a feminine space where women can shed the taboo of talking about their bodies, safe in the hands of expert staff was therefore a perfect inspiration for this fitting room.

The Fish Room
The Fish Room was named after a local family, who donated very generously to the Salisbury Breast Unit.

The Bumble Room
The Bumble Room provides a quiet space for patients in a comfortable and calming environment. This room was named after a couple who donated to the Breast Unit; whom when they first met, both had a dog named Bumble.
