What is a Haematologist?

The Consultant Haematologist is a doctor specialising in blood conditions. Our medical team is made up of consultants, a specialist registrar and junior doctors. He/she deals with illnesses such as clotting problems, bleeding problems, anaemia and a range of blood cancers including myeloma, lymphoma and leukaemia. Haematologists are also responsible for Blood Transfusion services within this hospital.

The medical team is supported by the Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialists, and the Clinical Trials Practitioner, Beena Eapen. There is also a dedicated anticoagulation service led by nurse specialist. This service supports patients on warfarin and other blood thinning drugs, initiates treatment of acute deep venous thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE) and provides counselling for patients with thrombophilia.
