Your first treatment will be on Pembroke Suite, located on Level 3 of the North building of the hospital. The Reception Team will welcome you and let the Nursing Team know you have arrived. The Nurse will come and collect you from the waiting room and will explain what to expect and ask if you have any questions about your treatment. They are always happy to answer any questions you may have. The Nurses will undertake some assessments such as blood pressure, check your blood results and may ask some questions about how you are feeling.
If you need a cannula, the Nurse will insert one into a vein. When your treatment is ready, two Nurses will come to you to check the medication, which is standard practice. The Nurse treating you will connect you to your treatment and monitor you.
There are different ways which medication can be administered into your body:
- Intravenous where medication is given directly into your vein;
- Sub cutaneous where medication is given into the tissue under your skin;
- Intramuscular where medication is given into a large muscle.
- You may be given oral medication to take. For your first cycle, you will collect your treatment from the Pembroke Suite following your assessment with the Nurse. Subsequent cycles are usually collected from Lloyd's Pharmacy based at the hospital, by the patient or their representative, either later the same day or next day. There are some exceptions, for example patients on clinical trials or compassionate use, who would continue collecting treatment from the Pembroke Suite. This will be made clear to you by your Clinical Team. Please note you may have to wait for a number of hours after your assessment or until the next day, before you are able to collect your treatment.
When your treatment is complete you may be able to go straight home, however sometimes we need to monitor you for a period of time. If there are any medications you need to take at home, the Nurse will fully explain these to you.
