What should I expect (typical pathway)?

Typical pathway

Treatment is recommended and planned specifically to treat each patient. So although we cannot give an exact pathway your treatment will follow, the following information is a guide to explain what may happen during your treatment. Timescales on the below process will also vary between patients depending on their diagnosis and condition.

Your oncology team will be able to advise you individually on the exact pathway and timescales of your treatment.

  • After your diagnosis and potential treatment plan has been reviewed at the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting, if you require systemic anti-cancer treatment (SACT – which is any drug related treatment to treat or control your cancer), then you will be referred to the Oncology Department.
  • You will have an initial appointment with the Consultant Oncologist to discuss your treatment plan in detail, you will be given the opportunity to also ask any questions you may have at this time.
  • Following this, you will have an appointment with a Clinical Nurse Specialist who will further discuss your treatment and will ask you for your consent for the treatment to go ahead. Again, please ask any questions you may have.
  • At this point some patients may require a PICC line to be inserted for medication to be given, please see the below information which explains PICC lines.
  • Once you have given your consent to your treatment plan, you will receive your first treatment.
  • Subsequently, you will have an assessment with your Nurse or a Doctor before your next treatment starts. You may be required to have a blood test before your appointment. In the appointment, you will discuss how your treatment has made you feel and to review your blood test results, if bloods were taken prior to the appointment.
  • Depending how many rounds of treatment you have been recommended, you will return for further treatment and blood tests, as required and you will be closely monitored by your oncology team.

More information on each of the above stages, are given in detail below:
