Hand Therapy

Plastic Surgery Hand Therapy Team

The Hand Therapy team consists of 12 Qualified Therapists and 1 Therapy Administrator, all of which are highly experienced and dynamic that pride themselves on providing a quality service and ensuring you have the optimum treatment experience.

Four of our Qualified Therapists have gone on to achieve the highly prestigious qualification of a Certified Hand Therapist and  two have an MSc in Hand Therapy.  The team works proactively with the research team and medical colleagues and is actively involved in current research projects.

We regularly manage a high volume caseload of a wide range of highly complex and routine upper limb and hand patients of all ages with diverse presentations, multiple pathologies and conditions. We provide rehabilitation for both acute and chronic conditions caused by trauma, surgery or disease including:

  • Fractures
  • Soft tissue and sporting injuries
  • Burns
  • Complex trauma
  • Amputations
  • Dupuytrens
  • Joint replacements
  • Tendon repairs
  • Nerve repairs
  • Elective surgery including fasciectomies and trapeziectomies.
  • Arthritic conditions
  • Neurological conditions
  • Tendonitis
  • Congenital Hand Conditions
  • Tendon transfers

We are well versed in broad range of specialist Hand Therapy assessments, treatments and modalities to restore optimal level of function and return patients to their activities of daily living. We perform advanced therapeutic assessment to provide a diagnosis and we have excelled in delivering and adapting effective individualised treatment programs through recommending a wide range of therapeutic media.

Depending on the injury or operation that you have had, your treatment may include the following:

  • Education on surgical procedures and timescales for recovery
  • Provision of splints (supports for your hand) to protect it after injury or surgery, or to assist with function
  • Exercises to improve range of motion and strength
  • Scar management
  • Oedema management
  • Pain management strategies and desensitisation
  • Functional rehabilitation
  • Emotional support

 We will give you leaflets and instructions for treatment if they are relevant for you. We will also give you a name and contact telephone number to contact if you have any questions or problems.

We will continue to work with you to achieve the best possible outcome after your injury, with the aim of getting you back to your previous level of function where possible.

Who Can Refer:

We provide a dedicated team of hand therapy staff whom are able to offer a wide variety of services such as accident and emergency, acute trauma, plastic surgery and complex trauma, burns, specialist scar management, congenital hand, paediatric trauma and general specialities.

We accept GP referrals for hand therapy both locally and nationally.
